Artist Statement
Jynell Bosacki Dimalanta is a Ventura born artist and potter.
I am first and foremost inspired by earth, and its living inhabitants - plant life, rivers flowing, mycelium digesting matter, the moon and the ocean and how they dance in reflection of each other, the patterns of insects and their demanding metamorphic journeys. A constant reminder of impermanence, process, and transitions.
I'm constantly seeking a balance of refinement and intuitive play in my process. But when I'm lost in refinement and repetitiveness - I lose my sense of play and curiosity. The only way I know how to find it is in nature's elements. The wildness of flame, healing waters, the stirring of wind that shakes the stagnation, and the earth which provides all and asks nothing.
Clay is a deeply intuitive material for me. It often leads me where I need to go, even before I fully understand the direction myself. My work is a dialogue between my inner world and this physical realm - an offering of myself, shaped by a deep sensitivity to nature’s quiet influences.
I created this body of work during a short term wood firing residency in China. Firing alongside some of my best friends, mentors, and incredibly talented artists and thinkers - this process is the most collaborative and intuitive work I have ever experienced. In three days of loading the kiln, and five days of firing - you get a lot of moments of stillness, and then tiny moments of urgency - again learning from nature's elements. It is the most alive I've ever felt. And it's kind of bizarre, because after all that it isn't really about the work that comes out of the kiln, at least not for me it isn't. Yes there is valuable information in the results. And damn that ash glaze can be juicy!
But if I take away all the attachments from the work and the results - the meaning and purpose of it all becomes something completely different. And I'm left with the most remarkable memories and friendships, ones that language can't quite hold.
